Instagram launches Hyperlapse app for time-lapse videos

The new standalone app hit, which is only available for iOS devices, was designed to let users ditch the tripods and create high-quality time-lapse videos with ease.

Facebook-owned photo-sharing service Instagram on Tuesday launched an application for capturing time-lapse videos using Apple mobile devices.

The Hyperlapse "app" was designed to let people easily make high-quality time-lapse videos even while moving around with a smartphone, according to Instagram.
Hyperlapse videos can be saved on mobile devices and shared on Instagram.
"From documenting your whole commute in seconds or the preparation of your dinner from start to finish to capturing an entire sunset as it unfolds, we're thrilled about the creative possibilities Hyperlapse unlocks," Instagram said in a blog post.

Hyperlapse applications were made available only for mobile devices powered by Apple software.
Market research firm eMarketer said in a report in March that nearly 35 million people in America accessed Instagram at least once each month as of the end of 2013, a jump of more than 30 percent from a year earlier.
And the report said nearly 25 percent of smartphone users in the United States will use Instagram at least once a month by the end of this year — bringing the total user base to more than 40 million.
Instagram in November began displaying ads as Facebook moved to start making money from the smartphone photo sharing service it bought in a billion-dollar deal in early 2012
APPLE/INSTAGRAMHyperlapse was released on Tuesday.

Al-Qaida breakaway pursuing an Islamic state

Fighters of the al-Qaida breakaway group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) burn an armored vehicle belonging to the Iraqi army in Tikrit, 80 miles (130 kilometers) north of Baghdad, Iraq, Wednesday, June 11, 2014. Al-Qaida-inspired militants seized effective control Wednesday of Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, expanding their offensive closer to the Iraqi capital as soldiers and security forces abandoned their posts following clashes with the insurgents.
An al-Qaida splinter group that has seized a huge chunk of northern Iraq commands as many as 10,000 fighters and has steadily been consolidating its hold on much of northeastern Syria across the border.
Its pursuit of an Islamic state that would straddle the two countries has thrown it into bloody conflict with both governments, Kurdish militias and Syrian rebels of all stripes. The group, known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, has employed a calculated strategy to achieve its aims, using everything from beheadings to terrify opponents to ice cream socials for children to curry favor with local populations under its control.
But it is the group's military prowess that has brought under its sway a swath of territory that stretches from the Syrian-Turkish frontier in the north down the Euphrates River all the way to the Iraqi city of Fallujah just 65 kilometers (40 miles) west of Baghdad.
This week, the group's fighters, many of them in fast-moving pickup trucks mounted with machine guns, captured Iraq's second-largest city, Mosul, before barreling south to take the city of Tikrit — two urban centers in the heartland of northern Iraq's oil industry.
The Islamic State is the latest and most powerful incarnation of what began as an al-Qaida affiliate in Iraq following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. American forces spent years and enormous resources to bring the group largely to heel before U.S. troops pulled out of the country in December of 2011.
Since then, the region has been convulsed in political turmoil and sectarian hatreds. The Islamic State has seized on those Sunni-Shiite tensions to help whip up its Sunni extremist followers.

Science varsity coming up in Bagamoyo town

Bagamoyo
Holy Ghost Fathers Mission has started the construction of Science University in Bagamoyo, with the aim of motivating and encouraging students interested in the subjects to fulfill their dreams of becoming “dependable” scientists.

This was revealed over the weekend in Bagamoyo by Marian school’s manager, Father Valentino Bayo, during the Marian Family Day sponsored by PPF Pensions Fund.

“We are aiming at producing more scientists in the future. By doing so we are supporting the government’s efforts of developing the science sector and having competent scientists in the country,” he said.

He said the idea of establishing the science university was started 13 years ago (in 2000), and that over the years the Marian school management has been working perfecting the plans, adding that currently the construction of buildings of Library and Laboratories for Chemistry, Biology and Physics are at an advanced stage.

According to Bayo, the university will be part of the Marian schools to enable them provide education from nursery to the highest level.

“This university will start under the umbrella of St Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT). The Marian school was started with only 42 students and four teachers in 1997, but to date the schools have enrolled more than 1,000 students,” he noted. Polycarp Cardinal Pengo, Archbishop of Dar es Salaam, congratulated the PPF for its sponsorship, and in a special way he applauded the effort of starting the construction of the Science University in Bagamoyo.

“The constructions of the University and Marian schools are the efforts of volunteerism. I would like to encourage people to maintain the spirit of volunteerism; it is not true that good education is obtained from abroad like a majority of people think…I went to study abroad after I pursued my first degree here in the country.”

For her part, PPF Marketing and Public relations manager Lulu Mengele said her office has disbursed 4.6bn/- from an education fund for sponsoring education of children of PPF-members who are studying in different schools, including Marian schools, since year 2003.

“For eleven good years we have been sponsoring education for students, last year, the fund spent 813m/- to buy school materials and pay school fees for 1,467 students from nursery to secondary school,” she said.

She said the beneficiaries of education funds are children who lost one of their parents who was a member of PPF, and contributed for three years and above.

One of the beneficiaries, Rozalia Madulu, a former student at Marian Girls secondary school, thanked PPF for continuing to sponsor her studies since 2007, when she was in standard II until the time her father died.
“After the death of my father my mother almost gave up taking me and my sibling to school, but thanks to PPF for holding our hands and giving us strength since then until today”, she said.

Tracy Morgan In Critical Condition After Car Crash

Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan was in critical condition Saturday after a limo bus he was riding in crashed on the New Jersey Turnpike, according to multiple reports. At least one person was killed, and two other passengers were also in critical condition.
The limo bus, which was carrying Morgan and six others, overturned at around 1 a.m. Saturday morning near Cranbury Township, Sgt. First Class Greg Williams of the New Jersey State Police told The Associated Press. The accident involved six vehicles, including two tractor trailers and an SUV.
One of the tractor trailers crashed into the limo bus, state police told The New York Times. The driver of the truck didn't notice that traffic ahead of him had slowed until it was too late, police told ABC News. The truck hit the limo bus from behind, sending it crashing into other vehicles before tipping over on its side, ABC reported. The Associated Press reports that the truck driver involved in the incident has been charged with causing the crash.
James McNair, one of Morgan's comedy writers who was also riding in the limo bus, was killed. He was 62.
Comedian Ardie Fuqua Jr. and Morgan's assistant, Jeffrey Millea, were both in critical condition, a hospital spokesperson told the AP.

10 Ways to Protect you Gmail account

Protecting your Gmail account means you must activate some tools that Google offers, and you must increase your scam savvy intelligence in order to spot phishing scams. If you do both, you can have a very well-protected Gmail account.
#1. Google 2 Step Verification. This is the Holy Grail of account security. Not really, but it’s the best they have available. With 2 Step you get a onetime log-in code to a secondary device like a mobile phone via text or the “Google Authenticator” app. I like text best. This will surely protect your Gmail account because a hacker would need access to this secondary device to bust into your account, since Google would require a six-digit unique code for this second device to access your account.
Speaking of codes, you can generate a number of one-time codes that you can use in the event of a mishap such as losing your device; you can use these codes to access your account from a temporary device.
#2. Stay out of Google's spam folder. Learn to ignore spam. Must you open every e-mail? Google does a pretty good job of spam/phish filtering. Leave the phishy/spammy messages alone and you’ll be in good shape.
Most malicious or “phishing” e-mails are very obvious, with any of the following in their subject lines:
-- Get back to me
-- Your money is waiting
-- If you don’t read this now you’ll hate yourself
-- Claim your reward
However, some subject lines look less suspicious, like “Your Amazon.com order has shipped.” If you use a unique e-mail account solely for Amazon or eBay, and then promise yourself never to click on a link inside the e-mail, you’ll be fine.
#3. Never give out your password.
Remember: If someone requests your Google account password, it’s malicious. If you think Google wants your password, don’t give it via any link in an email. Instead go to https://www.gmail.com or https://accounts.google.com/ServiceLogin and login.
#4. Account recovery options: Keep up to date. Always keep your mobile phone number current because it’s what Google uses to send you a security code. So if a hacker gets your Gmail account password, it’s useless unless they have your smartphone number, which Google will use to send you that code to prove your identity.
#5. Have a recovery e-mail address that’s also up-to-date because Google uses this strictly for sending security codes for when you forget a password. You should have this second email address also because Google will use it to send important security information.
#6. Secondary email address. This is in addition to the recovery address mentioned prior because you can use this alternate to sign into your Gmail account. Note, however, that this alternate address must not be part of your Gmail account or even associated with a second Google account.
#7. Use secure connections. Gmail should always be set to use a secure connection, denoted by HTTPS before the URL. Go to Settings, General, Browser Connection to set it up. Use a secure VPN for logging in. Hotspot Shield protects and encrypts your wireless connections.
#8. Strong & long is the name of the game. Enough of passwords like Puppylover1, carfiend1979 and Darlingmama. Don’t use words that can be found in a dictionary. Include symbols like #, * and $. The more nonsensical and longer the password, the better. Next, do not ever use your Google password for any other account. Your e-mail passwords should be equally nonsensical.
#9. Incognito. Use the “incognito” or “private” mode in browsers when you’re on a public or shared computer such as at a hotel. These modes will prevent cookies, web history and other data formation from getting stored. If these modes are not available, clear your cookies and browsing history when you LOG OUT.
#10. Finally, to protect your Gmail account, keep your system up-to-dateand secure with anti-virus and anti-malware.

Dubai cops may try Google Glass to catch speeders

Policemen patrol Gulf emirate of Dubai (AFP Photo / Karim Sahib)Policemen patrol Gulf emirate of Dubai
Dubai law enforcers are soon to start using Google Glass technology in order to catch speeding motorists and identify wanted or stolen cars, police told local media.
The wearable computer, installed on a pair of glasses can take photographs and video as well as access the internet. Dubai Police Smart Services Department has been trialing the technology to see if it’s suitable for traffic police’s surveillance purposes, according to Gulf News.
“If it passes our testing criteria as well as we see that it is a useful device, then we might decide to launch it and buy more of it,” Colonel Khalid Nasser Al Razooqitold the Dubai-based English language newspaper.

“We at Dubai Police always try to adopt what is new in the market and we like to stay up-to-date,” he added.

With Google Glass police might just tap the side of the eyewear to take the photograph, record its date, place and time, then go on to store it in the database.

Any police officer wearing the equipment would only have to look at a car in order for the technology to identify the plate. The equipment would then notify the police officer that the vehicle in view was considered wanted.

The spread of the technology to other markets beyond the US suggests that it may play a key role in security, law enforcement and other criminal cases in coming years.

The technology became available in the US last week. On April 15 the company announced that the Glass Explorer Program was available for a wider audience. “Any adult in the US can become an Explorer by visiting our site and purchasing Glass for $1,500 [Dh5,509] + tax,” said Google Glass on its official Google+ account.

Additionally, in February, the New York Police Department stated that it had been testing the technology “in a variety of circumstances,” among them, road violations.

However, Google Glass is not yet available for sale anywhere outside the US, with Google stating in the same April 15 release that the company was not yet ready “to bring Glass into other countries.”
